EVE Online is a game. It is an excellent game. It is an MMORPG with about 21,000 players on at any given time (unless the given time is during scheduled server downtime).
EVE Online is a space-based MMOG. You start out creating your character, choosing his or her attributes, race, and bloodline, and creating their portrait.
Then you start the game. You can choose to start in a station or in space.
The tutorial system helps a lot, as the game has a steep learning curve.
You start with a rookie spaceship of your race, and you can do various things to earn more money (the galactic currency is ISK).
There is combat, but it’s mostly point-and-click based; not much twitch-action here. I think of it as a ”thinking man’s game”.
EVE has a real economy: people mine asteroids and sell materials to producers, who produce stuff with those materials and sell it to other people, who sometimes mine asteroids.
EVE costs $20, with $15 per month after that. It comes with 30 days of free playing time when you buy the game, and there’s a 14-day free trial.
EVE is win. I was hooked after an hour. GET.
